SinC Atlanta hosted our annual Mystery Writing Workshop on August 8th, for writers seeking to elevate their crime and mystery fiction. It featured four terrific speakers, each tackling a different aspect designed to help craft stronger, richer, more accurate crime fiction and to do it faster.
Kanika Bailey — “Story Bibles for Series: Writing One Book Without Breaking the Next” Kanika showed us how a series bible can help writers keep characters, storylines, world building, and other details straight across multiple books—without turning the process into another full-time job.
Anna Christine Boulier — “Murder, Mischief, & Making It Make Sense: The Clues That Matter Method” For mystery and thriller writers, Anna dug into what makes clues work. She covered clue placement and tracking, misdirection, weak or missing clues, and how to create a reveal that surprises readers while still feeling completely earned.
L. M. Whitaker — “Using AI (Ethically) in Your Writing” Linda differentiated AI-generated from AI-assisted, and and discussed how writers can use the latter for research, writing, publishing, and marketing—along with some considerations on setting your own professional boundaries on AI usage.
Morgan Leslie — “From Lab to Literature: Incorporating Forensics into Creative Writing” Morgan introduced us to real-life forensics, from crime-scene practices to the many different forensic sciences available to investigators. Most importantly for writers, she showed us how to choose the right forensic techniques for a story and explain them without overwhelming the reader.
